Established in 1987, owners Rick King and Whitney Schwab started New Leaf Landscaping with the wish to provide professional, courteous, and complete landscape services to residences in the Triangle Area.

New Leaf currently operates two separate, but complementary, divisions. Although originally started as a design and installation firm, so many of our clients requested maintenance services upon completion of their landscape project that the maintenance division was created.

New Leaf Landscaping's Design and Installation Division includes three highly qualified designers, including:

  • Rick King - Rick has been doing landscape design and installation from his teen years. His interest in gardening resulted in attaining a degree in Biology from Franklin and Marshall College where he also managed the greenhouse. Now, with more than twenty years designing with New Leaf Landscaping, he has developed knowledge of what not only looks beautiful, but also "works" and thrives for years to come.

  • Russell Corey - Russell graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Horticultural Science in 2005 with a concentration in Landscape Design from North Carolina State University; his experience encompasses both designing and building landscapes. Russell ran and operated his own business upon graduation until he was recruited by New Leaf.

  • Mary Musson - Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Landscape Architecture from the NCSU College of Design; experience includes working for the NCSU Horticulture Department; NCSU College of Design's Natural Learning Initiative which specilizes in landscapes to stimulate children's love of the outdoors; and the University of Minnesota Architecture Department in Oaxaca, Mexico, with a specialization in courtyards.

The Installation Team includes four crews headed by:

  • Whitney Schwab, Installation Manager - As one of the founders of the company Whitney has accumulated countless hours in all phases of landscape installation. His ability to handle the purchase and delivery of materials, organize the work schedule and delegate to the very capable craftsmen that make up the New Leaf Landscaping crews combine to provide our clients timely completion of their landscape projects.

  • Joseph Rufty - Joe is also a graduate of the renowned Horticultural Science Department at North Carolina State University (NCSU). Before completing his degree Joe spent his breaks and vacations working at New Leaf Landscaping. He accumulated valuable experience to prepare for his current role as assistant installation manager.

Our installation projects range in scale from a simple planter to an entire site's landscaping, including plants, irrigation, pathways, walls, terraces, fences, water features, and lighting.   Please take a look at our photo gallery for a few samples.

The Maintenance Team includes five crews headed by:

  • Chris Dunn, Maintenance Manager, came to New Leaf from the prestigious Hope Valley Course where he managed all aspects of turf grass maintenance, including fertilizing, pest management, and special applications.

    • Coley Maynard, Account Manager, also attended NCSU in the horticulture department and has twenty years experience. He ran his own lawn application company. He also did installation and maintenance at the coast before returning to Durham and New Leaf in 2003. Coley serves our Chapel Hill clients.

    • Mike Kelley, Account Manager, has experience in both the installation and maintenance sides of our industry. He started with our installation department in 2002. He supported New Leaf in many capacities before moving up to become an account manager. Mike is dedicated to our Durham clients.
